Understanding VAT for Tradespeople

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax that registered businesses must charge on most goods and services in the UK.

VAT Rates in the UK

  • Standard Rate (20%) - Most goods and services including building, plumbing, electrical work
  • Reduced Rate (5%) - Energy-saving materials, mobility aids, some residential work
  • Zero Rate (0%) - Some new build work, certain exports

VAT Registration

  • Must register if your turnover exceeds £90,000 (2024/25 threshold)
  • Can voluntarily register even if below the threshold
  • Reclaim VAT on business purchases if registered
  • Submit returns quarterly or monthly to HMRC

Quoting to Different Customers

For consumers: Always quote prices including VAT - it's a legal requirement.
For businesses: Usually quote excluding VAT as they can reclaim it.
